"True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made."

— Franklin Roosevelt

Center on Environment & Energy Policy

The outline of a tree is superimposed on a blue globe in the symbol for the Environment and Energy Policy Center, and the blue ring of the Roosevelt symbol has been altered to resemble the arrows of recycling. Together, these elements represent the environmental sustainability and energy responsibility issues which the Environment and Energy Policy Center aims to address.

The environment is the life force of any nation, and the United States is remarkably lucky to have been blessed from its birth with wide open spaces: from land to sky to sea. With these blessing comes the task of responsible use and preservation. It is not enough to ensure that there are enough resources for tomorrow, or next year; rather there must be a broader insurance that as many future generations as possible are able to enjoy the same natural prosperity and benefits that we enjoy today.

Additionally, the energy and environmental issues have far-reaching ramifications. The global commons of the atmosphere, oceans, polar caps and near space, must be protected by all for all in the spirit of international cooperation and for a basic maintenance of the quality of existence for all living things. In this way, the progressive work of students in the Environment and Energy Center impacts the issues of every other center.

Some of the categories which the Environment and Energy Center focuses on are:

Energy
Environmental Innovation and Protection
Forestry
Outer Space
Science
Sustainability
Technology

Don't forget to check out the Discussion Forum on these and other topics located here.

For the Academic Year 2006 – 2007, using policy as their vehicle, the Roosevelt Institution challenges the students of American University to:

reduce America’s dependence on foreign, harmful, and unsustainable energy

…and the students of the Environment and Energy Policy Center accept this challenge.

Stay tuned to this page for updates on what we’ll be doing to address this issue.
